Kells - All Ireland Open Team of 4 Champions

The Kells Open team of 4 retained their All Ireland title last weekend when they recorded two hard fought wins over Mallow and Breacach,Tyrone at Cullohill. The Kilkenny outfit faced the strong Munster champions, Mallow,in the first semi-final at the Laois venue on  Saturday morning. The result of this match was a 84-35 win for the Kells side.

Following this win for Kells, they now came up against Tyrone's Breacach in the All Ireland final. The Ulster champions had earlier defeated St.Comans from Roscommon in their semi-final clash.

In the decider, Peter Funchion got his team off to a brilliant start when he defeated Gavin McCrystal, 21-12.21-13.This score line gave his side a 17 ace advantage heading into the Doubles contest. Here, Brian Minogue and Brendan Burke kept their team on course for victory when they put in a great performance against Johnny Woods. and Sean Kerr. While the Northern duo came out on top in both games,21-20,21-14,the score at the end of this match was 76-67 in favour of the Kilkenny team. Last up for Kells was Patrick Funchion and he put on a fantastic display in the deciding game. Not giving his opponent, Shane O'Neill any opportunity to settle into his stride, Patrick dominated from early on and was a comfortable 21-3 winner, thus sealing a great win for his club. This victory for Kells is their second in succession in this competition. The Kells team is; Peter Funchion, Brian Minogue, Brendan Burke, Patrick Funchion and Dan Breen.
