Irish Nationals 40x20 Report 2012

The Irish Adult 40 x 20 Nationals took place over the weekend of April 20th-22nd in Ulster and North Leinster venues

Mens Open Singles
Peter Funchion(Kells) was defeated by Joe McCann(Mayo) 21-15,21-9

Masters Singles Final 
Ducksy Walsh(Talbots Inch) defeated his long time rival Tom Sheridan(Meath) 21-12,21-11 to book his place on the Ofiicial Irish team for the upcoming World Championships in October. Ducksy also was on the Official team for the last World Championships in 2009

Mens 23 and Under A Singles
Patrick Funchion(Kells) was defeated in the quarter final by eventual finalist C.J. Fitzpatrick(Limerick) after a great match losing out 11-5 in the tie break

Mens 23 and Under B Singles
Dan Breen(Kells) defeated Peter Harte(Tyrone) 21-2,21-3 in the semi final and qualified for the final against Christopher McKenna(Monaghan). Dan lost out 21-8,21-17 to the very strong Monaghan player. This was Dan's second year in a row to lose out in this final

Mens A Singles
Brian Manogue(Kells) was defeated by eventual finalist Jerome Willoughby(Wicklow) 21-16,21-8

Mens B Singles 
Ciaran Neary(Talbots Inch) defeated Dale Cusack(Cork) and Declan Connaughton(Galway) on Saturday to set him up for a semi final against Tyrone's Ryan Daly. In a great display of handball the Talbots Inch man defeated Daly in the tie break. In the final Ciaran came up against recent All Ireland Junior finalist Terry Kiernan(Monaghan). On this occasion however Ciaran lost out to the Monaghan player 21-14, 14-21, 11-6 in a gripping final

Mens C Singles

Brendan Burke(Kells) defeated Eamonn Todd(Monaghan),Conor O’Conor(Meath) and after a tough battle defeated Peter Flanagan(Meath) 11-7 in the 3rd game in the semi final but unfortunately after 3 tough matches lost out in the Final to the hard hitting Peter Reilly(Meath) of Meath 21-17,21-3  

Silver Masters B Singles  
Recent All Ireland doubles winner Paul Dowling(Mothel) played Kenny Curran(Tyrone) in the semi final and in two tough games defeated him 21-15,21-16 to book his place in the final. Paul met Down player Sean McNally in the final and game out on the wrong side of a 21-8 scoreline in the first game but came back strong to win the second game 21-18 to set up a tie break. However on this occasion the Down player won out 11-4

Diamond Masters Singles
Jimmy Neary(Talbots Inch) was beaten by Dublin's Eugene Kennedy in the semi final in St. Mellans Truagh

Well done to Ducksy Walsh on winning the Nationals and qualifying for the world squad. Hard luck to beaten finalists Ciaran Neary, Brendan Burke, Dan Breen and Paul Dowling but well done on making the finals. Photos to follow
