Handball Injuries

posted 5 Apr 2016, 09:58 by Martin Lalor

Around 13,000 people in Ireland play the sport. Injuries to the upper limb were prevalent (52.9pc), followed by the lower limb (30.3pc). The shoulder (17.6pc), finger (10.5pc) and ankle (9.8pc) were the primary sites of injury.

Injuries occurred most frequently in December (9.7pc), January (9.7pc), February (9.7pc) and November (8.7pc), the Irish Medical Journal reported. Injuries predominantly occurred during games.

Seventy-five handball players (14-66 years) completed a self-report questionnaire. The study called for further research into injury prevention strategies.
