Saturday 25th October 2014
A super weekend for Kilkenny in colleges handball with 3 schools represented Castlecomer Community School, Grennan College Thomastown and Johnstown VS. Having won Leinster titles 8 grades were contested. They won 2 titles, were  runner up in 3 and lost in 3 semifinals. A great days work.

Girls Junior Doubles semi final  Kilfane's Ailis O’Shea/Dearbhail O’Keeffe (Grennan College, Kilkenny) were the first game on the programme  and somethimes playing first can put pressure on players.  The Kilfane girls struggled in the first game. After a break they started a lot better in the second and with a bit of luck might have levelled matters . But after a great battle  they lost to  eventual winners Katie McCarthy/Laura Stack (Hazelwood College Limerick)  this game could have went either way. very little seperated the players Limerick got in to their stride earlier and the Kilkenny girls were fighting from behind all the way through.

Girls Senior doubles semi final Clogh Girl's Aoileen Hennessy & Catriona Lawlor (Castlecomer C.S. Kilkenny) put in a super performance to win this semi final. Level at a game each  a super third game performance saw them into the final  with a win over  Michelle McCarthy/Niamh McCarthy (Hazelwood College Limerick). After a great effort in  the final   they lost out  to a very  strong Tyrone pair Eilise McCrory/Aoife Kelly (Dean Maguire, Carrickmore).

Boys Junior Doubles Semi final. Clogh lads  Ciaran Cooney/Eoin Regan representing (Castlecomer C.S. Kilkenny). These two lads fought hard all the way throughout this game they didnt get  the rub of the green in this match at all. They are two very talented young players and will without doubt  be a force to be reconed with in the future. Unfortunately they came up short in this  game loosing out  to Daire Madden/Sean McAdams (Borrisokane CC Tipperary).

Boys Intermediate Doubles   Padraig Cooney/Shane Dunne from the Clogh club and representing (Castlecomer C.S. Kilkenny). The two lads  were in top form with  super serving and general all round consistant good  play. In the semi final  they served up a super display of handball to defeat a very  good Cork pair in  David Walsh/Tadgh O’ Neill  (Patrician Academy Mallow). In the final they continued on their winning ways  easily accounting  for Conor Mohan/James Corley (St. Macartan’s Monaghan). This was a super performance by the two lads.

Boys Senior Doubles: Marc Purcell and Aidan Barry (Castlecomer C.S. Kilkenny) another pair of talented players from the Clogh club. They battled hard in this Semi-final but eventually  lost to Daniel Hayes/Jonathon Walsh (Cashel CC Tipperary) these lads will be heard of again two very good players  defeated by the eventual winners

Boys Junior Singles semi final Jack  Holden from The Kilfane club representing  (Grennan College, Kilkenny) had a brilliant win over Jack O’ Brien (John the Baptist CC Limerick). The final was a great game Both lads served up one of the games of the day this game could have went either way but the home advantage got  Michael Egan (Roscommon CBS)  over the finish line. This young man has another year to collect this title.

Girls Junior Singles: What can we say about this young lady, Kilfane's Aoife Holden representing (Grennan College, Thomastown ) one of the up and coming young players  on the handball scene at the moment. She trains hard and plays hard.  In her semifinal she brushed aside  the challenge of Doireann Murphy (St Flannans Ennis Clare).  And easily accounted for Laura Finn (Coláiste Mhuire, Ballymote) in the final To win this   title

Girls  Senior Singles : Niamh Dunne Cullahill and representing (Johnstown V.S. Kilkenny) easily defeated Sarah Lynch (Hazelwood College Dromcollogher Limerick) in the senior semi final.  Unfortunately Niamh lost her way in the final and was defeated by local girl  Fiona Tully (Convent of Mercy, Roscommon).
Well done also the first year doubles Kyle Dunne/Billy O'Neill Castlecomer CC on winning the Leinster title on Friday night.
Also a  a word of thanks to all the players and their mentors and School's for promoting handball.
