posted 20 Apr 2016, 14:34 by Martin Lalor

As the 40 x 20 season draws to a close, this Friday and Saturday the All Ireland finals of the Doubles championships will take place at venues in Kilkenny, Carlow and Laois. Of the twenty matches due to be played on Friday night and Saturday, Kilkenny will contest four of the finals.

First up on Friday night in Clogh are Joe Anthony and Gerry Murphy who contest the Diamond Masters B Doubles final against Mayo. The Mullinavat/Goresbridge duo have been in impressive form all through the championship and will be hopefully of finishing the season on a high with a win against the Westerners.

On Saturday morning in O’Loughlins, Ciáran Neary and Brendan Burke face a stiff test against Tyrone in the Intermediate Doubles decider. Having won the Leinster championship, the Talbots Inch/ Kells pair performed very well when beating Cork in the semi-final. They will need to up their game further to see off the Northern challenge.

This match is followed by the Masters A Doubles final with Duxie Walsh and DJ Carey taking on Antrim. On paper this would appear to be a comfortable win for Kilkenny, but the Antrim duo are very experienced and will present a tough challenge for the local pair.

Also playing on Saturday morning are Johnny Brennan and Joe Hennessy. The Mothel / O’Loughlins duo will face Antrim in the Emerald Masters A Doubles final in Clogh. This is a repeat of last year’s semi-final, a match that the Antrim duo won in the third set.

In what is a very busy two days of Handball, the 40x20 Doubles season concludes on Saturday at O’Loughlins with the Minor and Senior Doubles finals. Expecting a large crowd at the Kilkenny venue, Tyrone and Cork clash in the Minor final, and this is followed by the clash of Cavan and Dublin in the Senior decider.
