An in-depth feature with GAA Handball legend, Ducksy Walsh and his club in Talbot's Inch.

'THE GAA HANDBALL SHOW' has attracted a huge audience on the national TV station - TG4 - and enters it's final week in the build-up to a concluding double episode on Monday 31st January (from 8.30pm to 9.30pm)

jpegTo date, GAA Handball fans, and indeed spectators from all areas of Irish community, GAA and sporting life have taken great interest in the review of the 'perfect game'.
 
So far we have seen the best of action in the All Ireland 40x20 championships, the hardball championships, one wall nationals, the International one-wall focus at the Italian Federation Cup and the ladies 60x30 action and the final of the Mens Singles titles in the Softball series. In addition there have been 7 clubs and 9 schools featured during the series so far!
 
The episodes to date can be viewed online by clicking on the link below and Episode 4 will also be repeated on Saturday 29th January at 11.00am on TG4. 
 
On Monday night 31st January 2011, at 8.30pm, in Episode 5, the 60x30 softball championships are concluded with the Open Senior Doubles championship decider as well as a look at the '2010 Fans Match of the Year' - the Minor 60x30 Softball Doubles championship final. In addition there will be senior doubles semi-final action, a word from Uachtarán CLG about handball in the GAA and on the proposed new National Handball Centre at Croke Park, a background feature with GAA Handball Uachtarán, Tony Hannon, as well as an in-depth feature with GAA Handball legend, Ducksy Walsh and his club in Talbot's Inch. There will also be the latest Schools focus with 3 new one wall courts launched in St. Patrick's Grammar School, Armagh, as well as the incredible new 5-court complex at Peter Canavan's Holy Trinity College in Cookstown. Indeed Peter Canavan is featured on his new found love of handball!
 
Episode 6 will follow directly after the penultimate show at 9pm on TG4 and will focus the attention back to the Irish 40x20 Adult Nationals and a review of the first ever 40x20 Junior Nationals event which decided the irish Junior team to travel to the US Nationals in December. The final behind the scenes features for the series will be on Catriona Casey and her club in Ballydesmond as well as Caolan Daly and his club in Carrickmore.
 
This has proven to be a terrific promotional venture by GAA Handball and is the first of many exciting promotional initiatives by GAA Handball ahead of the 2012 World Handball Championships in just over 15 months time.

GAA Handball have, in conjunction with TG4, put out this exciting new TV Handball series to highlight not just the dazzling action on the courts of play but also to familiarise everyone in this country with a sport that is for all the family, males and females of all ages and how invaluable a sport this can be both in terms of health and socially within a community. The response from all quarters has been extremely positive and there is no doubt the nature of the game and how it will be portrayed is set to strike a chord with the 1000s of GAA clubs and 1000s more individuals all around the country.

 

 

Coming up in The GAA Handball Show... 

On Monday 31st January there will then be a double episode to conclude this exciting handball series.

Episode 5 (Mon 31st Jan, 8.30pm) will conclude the 60x30 championship action with the Senior Doubles decider taking centre-stage, with a very special feature on one of the greatest players ever to grace the game, Michael Ducksy Walsh (Kilkenny) and his famous home club, Talbot's Inch in Kilkenny. This will also have a focus on GAA Handball President, Tony Hannon, as well as a word from Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Christy Cooney.

Episode 6 

(Mon 31st Jan, 9.00pm) 

 

will complete the GAA Handball Show series with a look at the Irish 40x20 Adult and Junior Nationals, with focus on the Ballydesmond Handball Club and some of their star players, Catriona Casey and Tony Healy, a look at one of the rising young stars in 40x20 handball who won the recent US Nationals 19 & Under crown, Caolan Daly, while a final link up with the One Wall Schools initiatives and how this looks set to explode the sport to heights never witnessed before!

Meanwhile, St. Paul's GAA Handball Club in London, the first ever GAA Handball Club outside of Ireland but not the last with more to be announced in 2011 from Italy, Basque Country and more - was featured today on BBC World Sport

. This was an excellent feature and included a look at the England Handball Team with Peter Cohen interviewed. Niall McCann, a native of Fermanagh, was the instrumental figure behind the launch of handball in St. Paul's Academy in London and this latest feature was viewed by millions of viewers all over the world. The impressive profile gained by this will indeed go some way towards the International strategy of seeing Handball included in the Olympic Games in the not too distant future.
