jpegThis is undoubtedly an historic era for GAA Handball in Ireland with the latest hugely anticipated news providing a massively positive boost for the sport. Following on from the decision by the Dublin City Council in 2010 to approve the GAA's proposal to build a new 'state-of-the-art' National Handball Arena at Croke Park, An Bórd Pleanala, released their decision in relation to appeals against the building of the Centre.

The Bórd haven given approval for the new National Handball Arena, for which the GAA have committed €9 million to, to proceed and this is unquestionably one of the most historic milestones ever for Handball in Ireland.

Further information on the National Handball Centre plans...

The proposed centre was voted for unanimously by almost 100 delegates, representing 31 counties, at the 2010 GAA Handball Congress, and undoubtedly would provide the most remarkable impact in the history of Irish Handball. The opportunity to showcase our great games in world class showcase arenas, which would be attractive and enticing to the media and sponsors, would be incredible as part of the development of GAA Handball in Ireland. The entire design is geared to achieve the greatest possible impact for TV coverage in both the 40x20 and 60x30 courts and would thus provide the catalyst for GAA Clubs and Sporting Centres throughout the country to embrace handball as one of the top class sports, which handball followers and players everywhere know it to be!

The latest version of the plans for the proposed centre can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

The proposed National Handball Centre will include:

- 4 no. 40x20 courts, with the main 40x20 court arena comprising 730 seats for spectators, the other 3 courts having up to 100 spectator capacity.

- 1 no. 60x30 court arena, with seating for 730 spectators, the majority of the seating being at the rear of the court.

- There will be changing rooms and post match facilities including sauna, steam-room, etc... in the Centre.

- As was the case before, the design has been looked at to maximise the best possible coverage for TV and media and to attract increased spectatorship to our courts for National handball finals and handball events.

- Community Centre Facility within the centre to cater for the many community groups in the area.
